A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily stopped the Trump administration from sending the National Guard to Portland, following a legal challenge from state and city officials. US District Judge Karin Immergut issued the temporary order on Saturday, saying the deployment cannot move forward until the case is reviewed further.
The lawsuit, filed by the state of Oregon and the city of Portland, argued that the federal plan overstepped legal boundaries and risked heightening tensions in the city.
The Defence Department had earlier announced plans to place around 200 members of Oregon’s National Guard under federal control for a period of 60 days. Officials said the move was meant to protect federal property at locations where protests were either happening or likely to occur.
President Donald Trump had recently described Portland as “war-ravaged,” a remark that drew strong criticism from Oregon authorities, who dismissed the claim as “ludicrous.”
This comes only hours after hundreds of people filled the streets of Portland on Saturday, marching toward the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centre in yet another show of defiance against federal control.
While the day started peacefully with the protestors gathering at Elizabeth Caruthers Park, holding banners and chanting as they set off around midday. By early afternoon, they had reached the ICE facility and blocked the road outside, determined to make their voices heard.
Not long after protesters settled in front of the building, federal officers emerged and began firing tear gas, smoke canisters, and pepper balls to push the crowd back. “They fired several canisters,” said one protester near the front line, describing the confusion and panic that followed.
At least seven people were arrested outside the facility, some simply standing on the pavement when officers moved in. The tear gas lingered in the air as the crowd scattered, though most had gathered peacefully earlier in the day. Two of those arrested were later released.
The protest followed Trump’s announcement that up to 200 members of Oregon’s National Guard would be placed under federal control for 60 days to protect federal property. Many in Oregon criticised the plan, calling it unnecessary and heavy-handed.
