Trump endorses Blake Miguez for Julia Letlow’s seat | Local Politics

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Wednesday night endorsed Louisiana state Sen. Blake Miguez’s campaign for Congress in a post on Truth Social.

“It is my Great Honor to endorse MAGA Warrior, Blake Miguez, who is running to represent the tremendous people of Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District,” Trump wrote. “As your next Congressman, Blake will work tirelessly to Champion our Amazing Farmers and Ranchers, Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Ensure LAW AND ORDER, Support our Brave Military, Veterans, and Law Enforcement, Advance Election Integrity, and Protect our always under siege Second Amendment.”

Miguez, R-New Iberia, had been running for the U.S. Senate but switched races earlier this week after U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, R-Start, entered the race. Trump endorsed Letlow to challenge the reelection of U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge.

Miguez announced that he would instead run for Letlow’s 5th Congressional District seat, which includes much of Baton Rouge, northeast Louisiana and the Florida parishes.

“THANK YOU, President Trump for your ENDORSEMENT!” Miguez wrote in a post on X. “Louisiana deserves true, America First representation in Washington to back the MAGA agenda. President Trump is the greatest president in our nation’s history. I’m honored to have the endorsement and look forward to delivering for Louisiana’s 5th and our country.”

Trump’s endorsement, a potent benefit for Republican candidates, could shake up a crowded field of candidates who have said they intend to run in the heavily GOP district.

That field includes state Sen. Rick Edmonds, R-Baton Rouge, state Rep. Dixon McMakin, R-Baton Rouge, Misti Cordell, chair of the Louisiana Board of Regents, and Larry Davis, a member of the Republican Parish Executive Committee in Livingston Parish.

Miguez lives in the town of Erath in Iberia Parish — which is not in the 5th district. A candidate does not need to live in a Congressional district to run in it.

A Miguez campaign spokesperson said the senator “has maintained a residence in the 5th Congressional District since 1999 and operated a business location in Baton Rouge for over a decade.”
