Top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi arrived in Hong Kong on Thursday, a day before a signing ceremony for the establishment of an intergovernmental mediation body in the city.
Wang arrived on board flight CX973 from Xiamen at 1.34pm, with Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu due to welcome him at a dinner in the evening, the Post learned.
Wang, the Chinese foreign minister, will attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Organisation for Mediation at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Wan Chai on Friday.
The China-led body, announced in 2022, is designed to create an intergovernmental mediation platform for resolving international disputes.
Senior representatives from nearly 60 countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, as well as delegates from about 20 global bodies such as the UN, will also join Friday’s ceremony.
Among them are Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, who will sign the convention and hold several bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the meeting.
