2019’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, featuring Hanks playing the role of legendary television TV host Fred Rogers, is now available on Prime Video. The movie, which was directed by Marielle Heller and written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harspter, saw Hanks nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.
Alongside Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood also stars Matthew Rhys, Susan kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper, Maryann Plunkett, Enrico Colantoni, Wendy Makkena, Tammy Blanchard, Noah Harpster, and Christine Lahti.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood tells the story of the real-life friendship that blossomed between the beloved Fred Rogers and cynical journalist Tom Junod (Matthew Rhys, The Americans). The film sees the cynical journalist begrudgingly accepting an assignment to write a profile piece on the beloved icon and finds his perspective on life transformed.
“Lloyd Vogel is an investigative journalist who receives an assignment to profile Fred Rogers, aka Mr. Rogers. He approaches the interview with skepticism, as he finds it hard to believe that anyone can have such a good nature. But Roger’s empathy, kindness and decency soon chips away at Vogel’s jaded outlook on life, forcing the reporter to reconcile with his own painful past,” reads the film’s official synopsis.
The movie opened to critical praise, and still holds above a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, the movie was also successful, earning more than $65 million globally. For his efforts, Hanks was nominated for not only an Oscar, but also a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA Award.
