More than ever, we live in a world where smartphones have become a constant part of our lives, an extension of our daily routines. Because of this, digital security must play a more critical role than ever.
These devices have the power of a computer and are almost always connected to the internet, making them highly attractive targets for cybercriminals. In response to this threat, the National Security Agency (NSA) has revealed a simple but effective method to significantly reduce the risk of cyberattacks on mobile phones.
A simple action with a major impact
According to an NSA report cited by the well-known magazine Forbes, something as basic as restarting your device regularly can disrupt hacking attempts. Many attacks, especially those carried out through spear phishing, in which attackers use emails to obtain confidential information, and zero-click exploits, which require no user interaction, can be neutralized by rebooting the phone.

The NSA recommends turning your phone off and back on at least once a week. This simple practice can prevent malicious software from installing itself or stop an ongoing attack from persisting in the system. It can also reduce the number of system vulnerabilities that hackers may exploit to access the device without the user’s knowledge.
Other essential tips to protect your phone
In addition to restarting periodically, the NSA has shared other security measures that can make the difference between a secure device and a vulnerable one:
- Keep your system updated: Installing software updates promptly reduces the chances that hackers can exploit security flaws.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use: These connections can become entry points for attackers if left active unnecessarily.
- Avoid clicking unexpected pop-ups: Especially those that request app installations or downloads.
- Use a strong PIN code: The NSA recommends a PIN with at least six digits for better protection.

- Additional measures for advanced users: Although less practical for everyday users, the NSA also suggests covering your phone’s camera and using cases that protect the microphone to help prevent potential eavesdropping.
