The Peacock Inn in Chelsworth among best country pubs

The Evening Standard newspaper named The Peacock Inn in Chelsworth as one of the best country pubs.

The village pub is owned by Olly Sloboda and his wife Vicky, with head chef Sam Clover taking the lead in the kitchen.

Mr Clover uses locally sourced produce to create dishes on the regularly changing a la carte and eight-course tasting menus.

The newspaper said: “The pub is half restaurant with rooms and half beloved local, where regulars are greeted by name and there’s always a scotch egg to be had with a Mauldons ale from down the road.

“The magician who pulls off this trick is Jack Butler, surely one of the friendliest men ever to pull a pint.

“The best seats in the house are two button-backed leather armchairs in the bar opposite more of those wildly weathered beams and next to a fireplace big enough for an ox.

“The man who found the chairs at an antique shop and begged a lift to bring them back? Butler. He loves this place and you will too.”

It started the year by being added as one of the 12 Suffolk restaurants to be recommended by the Michelin Guide.

At the Michelin award ceremony in February, it received a Bib Gourmand award, which is given to eateries that offer good food at a great price.
