Following the sparkle of the London premiere, the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale cast touched down in New York, and if London felt like a royal affair, New York was more of a stylish reunion. With Elizabeth McGovern joining the lineup on this occasion.
Sequins, but make it sunset-inspired
Elizabeth McGovern was once again my highlight. She has this ability to surprise me every single time, and her Maison Murad Atelier pink and orange sequin gown was no exception. Sequins are nothing new on a red carpet, but this felt joyous and unapologetically bold. But when it came to the black train—my first thought was “why?” But her black velvet clutch and pumps did their best to plead its case. I’m still not fully convinced, but Elizabeth’s confidence makes it hard to care.

Polka dots sparkling like champagne bubbles
Michelle Dockery wore a Dolce & Gabbana off-shoulder gown. What I love most is how deceptively simple it looks at first glance, but the crystal-embellished polka dots come alive under the flashbulbs. This is the kind of maternity style that feels chic without trying too hard. She looked at ease, and radiant.

From London’s sparkle to New York’s snooze
Laura Carmichael, however, lost me this time. After London’s avant-garde look, her taupe strapless dress just didn’t stand a chance. It’s not bad—it’s just a non-event in that colour. Swap it for something richer, and I could’ve been singing a different tune.

The sleeker side of Maticevski
Joanne Froggatt wore a Maticevski strapless embellished dress. The designer usually gives us sculptural fireworks, but here he played it straight, and I didn’t mind. It might not scream the designer’s usual DNA, but it worked in a modern, unfussy way.
