A new documentary has revealed a surprising detail about the Stranger Things series finale following its release. In the new documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, series co-creators the Duffer Brothers revealed that they started filming the Season 5 finale without a fully finalized script. Notably, the finale concluded last month, bringing to a close a rich narrative filled with intricate mysteries and touching character moments.
Stranger Things’ finale didn’t have a finished script when its filming began
On One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, Matt Duffer said that they commenced production without a finished script for the Season 5 finale. He called the situation “scary,” adding that he, his brother, Ross, and the crew “wanted to get it right.” He further stated, ” It was the most important script of the season.”
Matt recalled the production team and Netflix pressuring him and Ross for the finale. “It was the most difficult writing circumstances we have ever found ourselves in,” he explained. “Not just because there was the pressure of we had to make sure the script was good, but there’s never been so much noise at the same time.”
Matt also noted that the finale was the “longest time” they spent working with the writers. He elaborated, “Just breaking it down beat by beat, pushing that thing to get as good as it could, just being honest and truthful with the show has always worked out for us.”
Matt clarified that they knew what the ending was, emphasizing that it was “all plotted out.” He stressed that he just had to write it, but that they were short on time. Notably, in the documentary, Montana Maniscalco points out, “We are shooting episode 8, which isn’t completely written yet — spoiler alert! So we don’t even fully know what’s going on.”
Further, Matt even admitted to the production team that he hadn’t “read through” Episode 8. And, all the while, they were just filming it. “I’ve never done anything like this before,” he added. “This is so weird jumping to eight… Don’t love it. Don’t love it.”
All five seasons of Stranger Things are currently streaming on Netflix. In addition to creating the show, the Duffer Brothers also served as producers alongside Shawn Levy, Iain Paterson, and Curtis Gwinn.
