Starbucks Is Bringing A New Kind Of Coffee To Grocery Shelves

I’m already a caffeine addict, so if I’m heading out to grab my usual iced coffee, I’m not exactly mad at the idea of sneaking in some protein while I’m at it. And now, apparently, I don’t even need to be standing inside an actual Starbucks to do it (even though there’s one on roughly every other corner).

Starbucks is bringing protein to the grocery aisle with a new line of ready-to-drink Starbucks Coffee & Protein beverages, launching nationwide on March 23. The bottled drinks are rolling out to grocery and convenience stores (plus online), which means your coffee run might start happening in the refrigerated section next to yogurt and string cheese.

Each 12-fluid-ounce bottle blends Starbucks coffee with 22 grams of complete protein, 5 grams of prebiotic fiber, five vitamins and minerals, and just 2 grams of sugar. Starbucks is aiming right for the “my morning drink needs to do something” crowd, which, to be fair, is a pretty crowded crowd these days.

The new line is launching in two flavors: Classic Caffe and Caffe Mocha, both priced at $3.99 per bottle. Starbucks says the drinks were developed through the North American Coffee Partnership, the long-running Starbucks-PepsiCo joint venture behind many of the brand’s bottled beverages.

This also fits into Starbucks’ bigger protein push. Last fall, Starbucks coffeehouses added Protein Lattes and Protein Cold Foams to the permanent menu in the U.S. and Canada, and these new bottled drinks basically take that same idea into the grab-and-go aisle.

If nothing else, it’s just one less reason to juggle a coffee in one hand and a sad protein bar in the other.
