The local elections will take place next week
Campaigners and volunteers for right-wing party Reform UK in Sheffield have reported various incidents of verbal and physical abuse to the police.
A social media post by Reform UK Sheffield West – Hallam & Heeley Branch claims candidates and volunteers in Sheffield “have been subjected to verbal abuse, attempts to intimidate, attacks on property and theft, and most seriously physical assault”. The group says the attacks have been reported to South Yorkshire Police.
It added: “Is this a democracy or an attempt at silencing us? This only makes us stronger and our supporters more determined to vote Reform.”
One party volunteer handing out leaflets in Greenhill said a man drove up to them and aggressively called them a “fascist and a racist” and shouted that “fascists like me were to blame for his uncle’s death in World War II”. The man continued to shout abuse at the campaigner as he returned to his car, they claimed. The volunteer said they were left “shocked and shaken”.
Reform UK Sheffield West said attacks are “completely unacceptable” and “won’t stand for it”.
Yorkshire Live has approached South Yorkshire Police for a comment.
