Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening ties with China based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity, during high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
“We are committed to advancing our relations based on mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity,” PM Modi told the Chinese President.
In his televised opening remarks, Modi emphasised that cooperation between India and China is vital not only for the two nations but also for the welfare of 2.8 billion people.
“Our cooperation is linked to the interests of 2.8 billion people of our two countries. This will also pave the way for the welfare of all humanity.”
The Prime Minister firmly brought up the issue of terrorism, describing it as a global menace and urging China to work together in combating the threat.
The Prime Minister, on X, shared a glimpse of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he is seen addressing him.
PM Modi noted that the recent disengagement of troops on the disputed border had helped create an “atmosphere of peace and stability.”
He credited the agreement between Special Representatives from both sides on border management as a step forward. “After the disengagement at the border, an atmosphere of peace and stability is now in place. Our Special Representatives have also reached an agreement on border management,” he said.
Meanwhile, Xi Jinping also emphasised the importance of cooperation between the two nations amid a rapidly changing global landscape. “…We are the world’s two most populous countries and part of the Global South…It is vital to be friends, a good neighbour, and the Dragon and the Elephant to come together,” he said.
PM Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday evening to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, after attending the G7 outreach summit in Japan.
This two-day visit marks the PM’s first visit to China after a gap of seven years.
PM Modi also invited President Xi to the BRICS summit that India will be hosting in 2026. The Chinese President thanked PM Modi for the invitation and offered China’s support to India’s presidency for the same.
