A Lincoln woman died in a car crash in Cumberland on Tuesday night, Nov. 11, according to the Cumberland Police Department.
The police identified her as Emma Bates, 25.
Bates was driving West Wrentham Road when her vehicle left the road and struck a large tree, the police said. The car caught fire and quickly became engulfed in flames, according to the police.
A resident heard the crash and tried to help Bates “before it became too dangerous for their own safety,” Cumberland Police Chief Matthew J. Benson said.
The crash is still being investigated, the police said.
Benson said, “On behalf of the Cumberland Police Department, I offer my condolences to Emma’s family, friends, and loved ones in this incredibly tragic situation.”
“I’d also like to publicly recognize the local resident who heard the initial crash and attempted to assist before it became too dangerous for their own safety and also the police, fire, EMS and communications personnel that participated in the coordinated response,” Benson said.
