WASHINGTON (Gray DC) – President Donald Trump returned to Washington after a three-day State Visit to the United Kingdom. The President touted the “special relationship” between both countries, But differences spilled out into the open during a joint press conference between President Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer touted their strong relationship during their joint press conference. But the President making it clear that he disagrees with the British plan to soon recognize a Palestinian state.
President Trump and Prime Minister Starmer clearly wanted to focus on the positive after their bilateral meeting.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer:
“We’ve renewed the special relationship for a new era, the United Kingdom. The United States stand together today as first partners on defense, first partners in trade.”
President Donald Trump:
“The bond between our countries is like no other anywhere in the world. The United States and the United Kingdom have done more good on this planet than any two nations in human history.”
But President Trump making it clear that he does not approve of the UK’s plan to recognize a Palestinian State next week at the UN General Assembly meeting.
“So I have a disagreement with the Prime Minister on that score. Okay. One of our few disagreements actually.”
For his part, Starmer further explained his position, distinguishing between the goals of a Palestinian state without Hamas.
“Well, let me be really clear about Hamas, a terrorist organization. It can have no part in any future governance in Palestine.”
The two leaders also discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine and efforts to bring Russian President Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table to end that war.
President Donald Trump:
“The one that I thought would be easiest would be because of my relationship with President Putin. But he’s let me down. He’s really let me down.”
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer:
“In recent days, Putin has shown his true face, mounting the biggest attacks since the invasion began with yet more bloodshed, yet more innocents killed. An unprecedented violations of NATO airspace. These are not the actions of someone who wants peace.”
These and other global issues will be back on center stage next week, when heads of state and government address the United Nations General Assembly. President Trump is expected to speak Tuesday.
