Perez Hilton is letting fans in on the health condition that landed him in a Las Vegas hospital for several weeks.
In a video posted to his YouTube channel on Monday, March 23, the famous gossip blogger revealed that he had begun taking medication for the flu earlier this year but did not take it with food, as instructed. Hilton, 47, revealed in the video, titled “my stupidity landed me in the hospital,” that after taking the medication for several days on an empty stomach, he developed an ulcer, perforation and sepsis.
After experiencing severe pain, he visited a hospital, where he ended up staying for 21 days.
“The first few days were a lot of pain and constant tests,” Hilton said in the video. “Because they couldn’t find where the perforation was.
“Eventually, after five days, I ended up having laparoscopic surgery,” he continued. “Surgery where they don’t cut you up, but they miraculously make these incisions.”
Laparoscopic surgery refers to a surgical procedure in which a physician can see the organs inside the abdomen by using a thin, lighted tube with a video camera, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The images can be seen on a video screen, after the tube is inserted through a small incision.
“My body just kept falling apart,” Hilton added, saying the doctor had to “flip around” his organs to find the perforation, then wash out the infection and drain his lungs. He was also put on cardiac medication after his “heart got out of control.”
Hilton concluded his video with a warning message. “I hope this video can be a cautionary tale to some of you. Take medication with food. That’s very important,” he said. “Take medication with food. Don’t have it on an empty stomach. Don’t end up like me in the hospital for 21 days.”
Hilton, the king of the celebrity rumor mill, previewed his revelation over the weekend, taking to social media to share a video of himself breathing shallowly in a hospital bed, with a tube of oxygen hooked up through his nostrils. He also shared a series of selfies in a separate post, showing him in a hospital gown and with his stomach exposed, various incision marks visible.
