Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe discuss the prospects of returning in an Outlander spin-off

Amidst the release of the final season of Outlander on Starz, fans are bracing for the end of an era. Season 8 is set to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion. However, that hasn’t stopped viewers from wondering whether they might see Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe again for an Outlander spin-off.

When asked about reprising their iconic roles in potential spin-offs, both actors remain open to the idea with conditions. “I think we always say, never say never,” Balfe told People. Heughan echoed the sentiment, adding, “Never say never.”

The two stars, who have played the Fraser clan’s matriarch and patriarch for over a decade, aren’t interested in returning for just any project. Heughan suggested the Outlander spin-off should be set in Hawaii. Basically, giving him and his longtime co-star the chance to film in a tropical location. On a more serious note, Balfe clarified what it would take to bring her back. “I think, definitely, it would have to be, if there was a great script and it gave these characters a good reason to revisit them.”

But for now, Caitríona Balfe describes the final months of Outlander’s filming as particularly intense. “It had been an emotionally taxing nine months during filming,” she explained. It was because she and Heughan “felt so much responsibility to make it right, and everything felt heightened.” For Sam Heughan, walking away from Jamie Fraser wasn’t something he felt ready to do when production wrapped on Season 7.

He admitted that complete satisfaction may be impossible, largely because the source material remains unfinished. Diana Gabaldon’s book series, which began in 1991, is still ongoing. The author has announced the 10th installment. A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out will be the final book, though no release date has been confirmed.
