Original Harry Potter Star Shuts Down Potential HBO Reboot Return Speculation

Ahead of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter TV series, a key actor from the beloved film franchise is making it clear he has no desire to revisit the Wizarding World. David Thewlis, who played the werewolf Professor Remus Lupin, expressed that he is thoroughly done discussing a potential return.

David Thewlis says he has had ‘quite enough’ of the Harry Potter franchise

In a recent interview with ScreenTime, David Thewlis addressed ongoing speculation about whether he might reprise his role as Remus Lupin or appear as another character in HBO’s Harry Potter series. The actor dismissed both ideas, explaining that age and repetition play a major role in his decision.

“I feel like I’d be far too old to play my original character now. And no, I wouldn’t want to go back into it because I’ve had quite enough of that, sick of talking about it quite honestly,” Thewlis said.

While firm about his lack of interest, Thewlis added that he still appreciates the franchise for the joy it brings to young audiences. “It is nice because with Harry Potter it’s kids, and kids get very kind of impressed and very overawed, and it’s very nice to make kids happy,” he noted.

David Thewlis appeared in five of the eight Harry Potter films, first debuting as Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Lupin played a central role in the third installment as Hogwarts’ Defense Against the Dark Arts professor before returning as a supporting character in later films, including Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and both Deathly Hallows movies. The character ultimately dies in Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Now, HBO’s adaptation, announced in 2023, plans to cover one book per season, meaning Lupin would not appear until season three unless the story doesn’t stick to the source material. As a result, a new, younger actor is expected to take on the role. The series stars include John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. The show is expected to debut in 2027.
