Gerard Butler’s new action movie has a surprisingly high budget.
Butler is reprising his role as John Garrity in Lionsgate’s Greenland 2: Migration, which is now playing in United States theaters. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the sequel to 2020’s Greenland also stars Morena Baccarin as Allison Garrity and Roman Griffin Davis as Nathan Garrity.
What is the budget for Gerard Butler’s Greenland 2?
According to Variety, Greenland 2: Migration, which is produced by STX, has a budget of $90 million. Lionsgate acquired the domestic rights to the movie for approximately $10 million.
This is surprising given that Greenland 2 is almost three times more expensive than the first Greenland movie, as that film had a budget around the $35 million range. Greenland grossed around $52.3 million globally; however, that movie debuted on demand rather than in theaters because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Variety also reports that Greenland 2: Migration is currently expected to make somewhere between $8 million and $11 million this weekend in the United States.
The synopsis for the movie reads, “In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the earth, Greenland 2: Migration follows the Garrity family (Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roman Griffin Davis) as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home.”
The cast of the movie further includes Amber Rose Revah, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, Sophie Thompson, and William Abadie. The script comes from Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling, while Butler, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Alan Siegel, Sebastian Raybaud, John Zois, Brendon Boyea, and Waugh all serve as producers.
The original Greenland movie is currently available to stream on HBO Max at this time, while it can also be rented or purchased on outlets such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
