Net migration halved last year to 431,000, down from 866,000 a year earlier, in the biggest fall ever recorded due to a series of restrictions introduced by the last government.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the sharp decline was driven by reductions in immigration from non-EU countries for work and study visas and an increase in emigration from the UK.
It said the exodus was driven by a large number of international students leaving who originally came once the Covid-19 travel restrictions to the UK were eased.
The ONS’s provisional estimate for immigration to the UK in 2024 is 948,000, a decrease of almost a third compared to the year before.
