National Family Meal Month: Hy-Vee shares budget friendly, healthy breakfast meal
SEAN WILL HAVE YOUR FORECAST COMING UP. YOU KNOW IT IS NATIONAL FAMILY MEAL MONTH AND WE’RE PARTNERING WITH HYVEE TO SHOW YOU HOW YOU CAN GATHER YOUR FAMILY AT THE TABLE FOR A LOW COST. KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S JACK KEENAN REPORTS NUMBER IS NATIONAL FAMILY MEALS MONTH. SO THIS MORNING WE ARE TEAMING UP WITH HY-VEE DIETICIAN AMANDA YOCUM FOR SOME BUDGET FRIENDLY, HEALTHY MEALS FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. AMANDA, THANKS FOR SHOWING US SOME NEW RECIPES TODAY. THANKS FOR BEING BACK. SO THIS IS PEANUT BUTTER BANANA BAKED OATMEAL. AND I WANT TO START WITH THIS IS BECAUSE YES, IT’S FAMILY MEALS MONTH. BUT IT DOESN’T MEAN IT HAS TO BE DINNER. SO LET’S START WITH BREAKFAST. WE LOVE BREAKFAST. THAT’S WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO. SO THIS IS A BAKED DISH WHERE WE CAN REALLY START IT AHEAD OF TIME. SO WHAT WE’RE GOING TO DO IS WE HAVE OUR BANANAS RIGHT? BANANAS. AND OF COURSE WE HAVE TO TALK ABOUT BUDGET, RIGHT. AND SO WHEN THOSE BANANAS GET A LITTLE BAD DON’T THROW THEM OUT. OKAY. SAVE THEM AND USE THEM FOR THIS RECIPE. SO I’M GOING TO MASH THESE BANANAS. AND WHILE I’M DOING THAT I’M ACTUALLY GOING TO ADD A LITTLE BIT MORE PEANUT BUTTER HERE. AS WELL. GOOD. SO BANANAS PEANUT BUTTER I MEAN YOU CAN’T GO WRONG. CLASSIC COMBINATION RIGHT. RIGHT. AND THIS IS ALSO A GREAT RECIPE TO GET KIDS INVOLVED. AND SO IF YOU WANT THEM TO TRY NEW FOODS, GET THEM IN THE KITCHEN, THEY’RE MORE LIKELY TO EAT IT. AND THE WHOLE GOAL OF THIS IS TO GET THE FAMILY AT THE TABLE ONE MORE TIME PER WEEK. ONE MORE TIME. THAT’S RIGHT. AND AGAIN, IT CAN BE ANY TIME OF THE DAY. LOVE THAT. THERE’S BEEN SOME GREAT RESEARCH THAT SHOWS WHEN FAMILIES SIT DOWN TO EAT. KIDS HAVE BETTER GRADES AT SCHOOL. THEY’RE LESS LIKELY TO PARTAKE IN DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, AND THEY HAVE MORE A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FAMILY. IN GENERAL, QUALITY TIME? YES, ABSOLUTELY. SO OF COURSE, AS DIETITIANS, WE’RE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND QUICK, EASY SOLUTIONS. AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM. SO WE HAVE THE BANANAS AND THE PEANUT BUTTER ALL MIXED UP HERE. MIXED UP EASY. YEP, YEP. AND MORE RIPE. THOSE BANANAS GET, THE EASIER IT IS TO MASH THEM. THAT’S RIGHT. NOW THE NEXT THING I HAVE IS THREE FOURTHS CUP FAIRLIFE SKIM MILK. OKAY. AND I’M USING THE FAIRLIFE MILK BECAUSE IT’S ACTUALLY HIGHER IN PROTEIN AND IT’S LACTOSE FREE. SO EASY WAY TO GET SOME PROTEIN. THAT’S RIGHT. AND SO WE’LL MIX THAT TOGETHER. AND THIS IS AGAIN SO EASY. WE’RE JUST DUMPING THINGS AS WE GO. WE HAVE ONE EGG ONE EGG. ALL RIGHT. BLENDED COMING TOGETHER. NOW WE HAVE A LITTLE MAPLE SIRUP WHICH GIVES IT A LITTLE SWEETNESS. FUN. YES. YEP. AND THESE DO TASTE GREAT AS WELL. YOU KIND OF GET THE MAGIC COMBINATION OF VALUE, NUTRITION AND STILL TASTING GOOD. AND THE OTHER THING IS TOO, YOU CAN MAKE THIS THE NIGHT AHEAD AND THEN YOU HAVE IT READY FOR THE MORNING. GREAT IDEA. ALL RIGHT. NEXT I HAVE IS CINNAMON, A LITTLE SALT AND A LITTLE BAKING POWDER. OKAY. AND GET THAT GOING. YEP. AND LASTLY OF COURSE WE HAVE OUR OATS. SO OATS HAVE THAT HIGH FIBER WHICH IS GOING TO GIVE YOU THAT FILLING FACTOR TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN STAY FULL UNTIL MAYBE SNACK TIME. OR FOR THE DAY. YES. OR LUNCH. AND THAT IS IT. WE LITERALLY JUST MIX IT UP AND AGAIN GET THE KIDS INVOLVED. LOOK HOW EASY IT WOULD BE FOR THEM TO HELP. JUST A COUPLE OF MINUTES. PERFECT, RIGHT. ALL RIGHT, AMANDA, WE’VE GOT OUR MIXTURE HERE. HOW LONG DO WE PUT IT IN THE OVEN? YES. SO YOU PUT IT IN THE OVEN OF 350 DEGREES FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES UNTIL IT GETS BAKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH, WHICH I HAVE THE FINAL VERSION HERE, AND WE’LL CUT IT UP INTO ABOUT FOUR SERVINGS, AND THEN YOU CAN DRIZZLE A LITTLE PEANUT BUTTER ON TOP AS WELL. PERFECT. READY TO GO? WHERE ELSE CAN YOU FIND RECIPES JUST LIKE THIS RIGHT?
