With the victory, the democratic socialist will etch his place in history as the city’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage and the first born in Africa. He will also become the city’s youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office on Jan. 1.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill has been elected governor of New Jersey. Her victory over Republican Jack Ciattarelli shores up Democratic control of a state that has been reliably blue in presidential and Senate contests but had shown signs of shifting rightward in recent years. The four-term member of Congress centered her campaign on her biography as a Navy helicopter pilot and former prosecutor who would stand up to President Donald Trump. She will be New Jersey’s second female governor. Ciattarelli lost his second straight governor’s election after coming within a few points of defeating Gov. Phil Murphy four years ago.

On Wednesday, the bodies were returned to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The exchanges are part of a U.S.-brokered agreement, though both sides have accused each other of violations. The deal aims to wind down the war that began with a Hamas-led attack on Israel.
California voters approve new US House map to boost Democrats in 2026
LOS ANGELES (AP) — California voters have approved a plan to overhaul the state’s congressional district boundaries, giving Democrats a boost in their bid to win the U.S. House majority next year. The approval of Proposition 50 could allow Democrats to gain up to five additional seats in the 2026 midterms, when they hope to gain the power to block President Donald Trump’s agenda in Congress. The measure was pushed by Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom in response to a Republican-led redistricting effort in Texas. The California measure replaces maps drawn by an independent commission with new districts created by the Democratically controlled Legislature.
UPS plane crashes and explodes at a Kentucky airport, leaving at least 9 dead and others missing
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — First responders are searching for more victims after at least nine people died and 11 were injured when a UPS plane crashed while taking off from the airport in Louisville, Kentucky. The plane crashed Tuesday as it was departing for Honolulu from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport. Video showed flames on the plane’s left wing and a trail of smoke. The plane then lifted slightly off the ground before crashing and exploding in a huge fireball. Video also revealed portions of a building’s shredded roof next to the end of the runway. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says he expects the death toll to increase and said 16 families reported loved ones unaccounted for. The airport has resumed operations.
France suspends access to Shein online platform as the retailer opens its first store in Paris
PARIS (AP) — France’s government says it is suspending access to online retail giant Shein until the company proves that its content conforms with French law. The decision, announced in a statement by the Finance Ministry, came after controversy over sex dolls with childlike features were found listed for sale on Shein’s website. The move came on the same day that Shein opened its first permanent store in Paris inside one of the city’s most iconic department stores. On Wednesday morning protesters camped outside the BHV department store, but crowds of shoppers turned out undeterred. Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves 85 dead, mainly in Philippine province still recovering from deadly quake
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Typhoon Kalmaegi has left at least 85 people dead and 75 missing in the central Philippines. Many were trapped on roofs or swept away by floods in Cebu, which was hit hard on Tuesday. Among the dead were six killed in an air force helicopter crash. Kalmaegi moved into the South China Sea on Wednesday. Cebu in the central Philippines declared a state of calamity to speed up the emergency response. The province is still recovering from a recent earthquake. Before landfall, over 387,000 people evacuated. Kalmaegi is now heading toward Vietnam and Thailand, where more heavy rain is expected.
Wall Street holds steady as earnings reports flow in
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are holding relatively steady on Wall Street as more U.S. companies turn in their latest quarterly reports. The S&P 500 rose 0.1% in early trading Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 65 points, or 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.3%. Taser maker Axon Enterprise slumped after forecasting weaker profits than analysts were expecting. Live Nation fell after reporting weaker earnings than analysts’ expected. McDonald’s rose after reporting that its sales benefited from the return of its popular Snack Wraps in the third quarter. European markets were mostly lower and Asian markets mostly fell.
