Dick Cheney, one of the most powerful and polarizing vice presidents in US history, dies at 84
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President George W. Bush says Dick Cheney was a “decent, honorable man” whose death is “a loss to the nation.” Cheney’s family says he died Monday of complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. Bush said Tuesday history will remember his vice president “as among the finest public servants of his generation.” Cheney was a hard-charging conservative who became one of the most powerful and polarizing vice presidents and a leading advocate for the invasion of Iraq. Cheney led the armed forces as defense chief during the Persian Gulf War under President George H.W. Bush before returning to public life as vice president under the younger Bush.
Trump’s strength, Democrats’ message and the shutdown effect. What to watch on Election Day 2025
WASHINGTON (AP) — Voters head to polls in America’s first major Election Day since President Donald Trump returned to the White House. The Republican president did not hit the campaign trail to help his party’s candidates or causes ahead of Tuesday’s voting. But his leadership and policies dominated the debate virtually everywhere. No contests are bigger than governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, the only two this year. The GOP candidates in both states closely aligned themselves with Trump. Strong Democratic showings could provide the party a pathway back to national relevance — even if its top candidates have taken very different approaches.
New York City voters are choosing their next mayor as Mamdani faces Cuomo in a generational battle
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City voters are choosing their next mayor, as Zohran Mamdani faces former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a generational battle between Democrats while Republican Curtis Sliwa tries to land a massive upset. A victory for Mamdani in Tuesday’s election would give the city its first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in generations, while giving his brand of economic populism one of the most visible political perches in America. If Cuomo wins, he will have staged a remarkable political comeback after resigning as governor over a barrage of sexual harassment allegations four years ago. Sliwa faces tough odds as a Republican in a heavily Democratic city. Polls close at 9 p.m.
Government shutdown could become longest ever as Trump says he ‘won’t be extorted’ by Democrats
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is indicating in court that it will only partially fund the federal food assistance program as the government shutdown reaches into a second month. The Department of Agriculture had planned to withhold $8 billion needed for the food program starting Saturday until two judges ordered the administration to fund it. Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday that he was “optimistic” the Senate could vote to reopen the government by the end of the week if lawmakers make progress over the next couple days. That followed comments from President Donald Trump who said he “won’t be extorted” by Democrats to reopen. Democrats say they want to fix a health care crisis and extend subsidies.
Republicans seek to tap into Trump energy on eve of Election Day in New Jersey, Virginia
TOTOWA, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Republicans are trying to ride the coattails of President Donald Trump’s 2024 electoral momentum. Gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Virginia candidate Winsome Earle-Sears are crisscrossing their respective states, while Trump spoke at telephone rallies with voters Monday. This comes after their Democratic opponents Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger campaigned over the weekend alongside former President Barack Obama. Ciattarelli spent time Monday courting voters in a key traditionally Democratic stronghold that contributed to Trump’s gains in New Jersey. It’s a delicate balance for Republicans, who want to catch some of Trump’s electoral energy while not dismissing concerns about increasing costs.
Worker dies after 11 hours trapped within partially collapsed medieval tower in Rome
ROME (AP) — Firefighters have rescued a worker from beneath rubble inside a medieval tower in Italy’s capital. The tower partially collapsed during renovation work. The man, identified as Octav Stroici, died shortly after being rescued late Monday. Rescuers faced a complex task, using cranes and drones to reach him. Three other workers were rescued unharmed. The Torre dei Conti, built in the 13th century, has been undergoing restoration since June. Italian prosecutors are investigating possible charges for negligent disaster and injuries. The tower has been closed since 2007 and was nearing the end of its current restoration phase.
Rescuers in Nepal search for climbers’ bodies in an avalanche
KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Rescuers have been digging through ice and snow on a mountain in Nepal to find the bodies of seven climbers killed by an avalanche. The avalanche hit the base camp at Mount Yalung Ri on Monday morning. Snowstorms delayed rescue efforts, but the weather cleared Tuesday, allowing a helicopter to land with rescuers. The Dolkha district administration office said eight injured climbers were flown to Kathmandu for treatment. Three bodies have been recovered so far. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Tourism Department confirmed the deaths of two Italian climbers on a separate mountain. They were climbing Panbari Peak when contact was lost Friday.

Tuesday’s incident happened near Bilaspur, about 116 kilometers (72 miles) from Chhattisgarh’s state capital, Raipur. Local media showed videos of one train ramming into another near the accident site as rescuers searched through the debris. Senior government official Sanjay Agarwal said rescuers are trying to cut through the wreckage for survivors.
Scientists spot the brightest flare yet from a supermassive black hole
NEW YORK (AP) — Scientists have spotted the brightest flare yet from a black hole. It was first spotted in 2018 by a camera at the Palomar Observatory in California. The cosmic outburst likely happened because a large star wandered too close to the black hole and got shredded to pieces. It took about three months to shine at peak brightness, about the light of 10 trillion suns. Almost every large galaxy, including our Milky Way, has a supermassive black hole at its center. Studying such behemoths can help researchers understand the stellar neighborhood surrounding them. The research was published Tuesday in the journal Nature Astronomy.
Losses for Big Tech pull Wall Street lower
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks fell on Wall Street, pulled down by losses in the same big tech companies that have been the main drivers of the market’s rally so far this year. The S&P 500 slid 0.7% in morning trading Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 194 points, or 0.4%. The Nasdaq composite sank 0.9%. Palantir Technologies, which had more than doubled so far this year, fell 8% despite reporting results that beat analysts’ forecasts. Nvidia also reversed course, further weighing down the broader market. European markets were lower and Asian markets fell overnight. Treasury yields edged lower in the bond market.
