This May, a new production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute will dazzle Hongkongers at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. The production will run from May 15 to 18 as a two-act opera in collaboration between Opera Hong Kong, China National Opera House, and the State Opera South Australia.
At the helm will be visionary Chinese director Shuang Zhou, with stage sets and costumes by acclaimed designer Dan Potra. After its Hong Kong premiere, the production will tour internationally as well. Keep reading to find out what you can expect from the new production!

The new production will offer a fresh interpretation of Mozart’s timeless masterpiece. Viewers can expect a journey that bridges culture and showcases classic opera. Zhou’s vision transforms the story from a mythical quest into an exploration of Eastern philosophy and urban life.

“Concepts such as the non-dual aspects of the self-awakening process, the idea that truth is found from within, that faith and compassion are the essential method in finding love and truth – all of these are right there in the story,” said Zou.
Meet the stellar creative team
In addition to Zou, the production team will include Dan Potra. His work has been featured in the Sydney Olympic Games opening ceremony as well as other international opera productions. Meanwhile, conductor Dane Lam will lead the operatic performance. His experience includes collaborations with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and other world-class ensembles.
When it comes to the cast, Mexican-German tenor Andrés Moreno García will star as Tamino while American soprano Sofia Troncoso will play Pamina. American baritone John Chest will be Papageno and Russian soprano Aigul Khismatullina will star as the Queen of the Night. Joining the lead cast will be local talents Freddie Tong, Candice Chung, Ashley Chui, Carol Lin, and more.
Tickets are now available via Urbtix. Prices are HKD 1280 (USD 164.94), HKD 1080 (USD 139.17), HKD 880 (USD 113.40), HKD 680 (USD 87.63), HKD 480 (USD 61.85), and HKD 280 (USD 36.08). A limited number of concession tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above, persons with physical impairments, and recipients of the Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA).
