Mistakes Stopping Weight Loss Injections | GP Advice

Weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Ozempic remain hugely popular, but stopping them incorrectly could undo all your progress.

With the latest Mounjaro price hike pushing some patients to rethink their treatment, experts are warning that coming off these jabs without a plan can trigger rapid weight gain, poor eating habits, and a loss of hard-earned results.

Dr Donald Grant, GP and Senior Clinical Advisor at The Independent Pharmacy, explains the pitfalls to avoid when stopping weight loss injections — and how to protect your progress.

1. Stopping Cold Turkey

“These treatments actively suppress appetite,” Dr Grant explains. “Stopping abruptly could send your appetite soaring, leading to poor eating habits and rapid weight gain.”

Instead, speak to a GP before quitting. A tapering plan, combined with personalised diet and lifestyle advice, will make the transition smoother.

2. Ignoring Lifestyle Changes

One of the biggest mistakes? Thinking the injections did all the work.

“When stopping weight loss injections, it’s crucial that people replace the treatment with another way to keep the weight off,” Dr Grant says.

That means daily activity — from walking or cycling to regular gym sessions — and sustainable nutrition habits that don’t vanish when the jab does.

3. Stopping Too Early

“These drugs are designed for long-term use,” says Dr Grant. Ending treatment prematurely can rob the body of the time it needs to adjust.

A longer course not only maximises results but also reduces the likelihood of piling the pounds back on when treatment ends.

4. Skipping Dietary Adjustments

As appetite often rebounds, failing to set up a proper food plan can be a fast track to undoing progress.

Dr Grant recommends building a structured routine: “A well-balanced diet with high-protein, fibre-rich foods and healthy fats is key. Don’t crash-diet — focus on sustainable, nourishing meals.”

5. Not Tracking Weight

Nobody wants to become obsessive, but regular check-ins are essential.

“Monitoring weight closely after treatment helps you spot changes early and adjust your lifestyle before the pounds creep back on,” Dr Grant advises.

The Bottom Line

“While these injections are incredibly effective, not amending lifestyle habits or diet can have massive impacts on progress,” Dr Grant warns.

For anyone considering starting treatment, it’s worth noting that Mounjaro, Ozempic, and Wegovy aren’t available over the counter — a medical consultation is required. Currently, adults with a BMI over 30, or over 27 with weight-related health concerns, may qualify.
