Milwaukee police shut down bars on Brady Street in the early morning of Sunday, Oct. 26, due to large crowds.
The Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement that officers “observed unusually large crowds of individuals participating in the Brady Street Halloween Party” around midnight between Oct. 25 and Oct. 26.
Police said officers responded to multiple calls for service, which included “fights and unruly individuals.” Traffic also became gridlocked as crowds grew, according to police.
To ensure safety, police requested bars and restaurants in the area stop allowing people in.
Isiah Lopez, an employee at The Dogg Haus, 1433 E Brady St., said he wasn’t working that night, but a coworker told him that police officers came in around 12:30 a.m. Oct. 26 and said “it’s been out of control,” and that they were telling every business in the area to close their doors at 1 a.m.
Police said crowds began to disperse after bars and restaurants stopped letting people in, which allowed for the night to end safely.
“MPD appreciates the cooperation of all businesses that assisted in making the festivities safe for everyone participating,” the police statement said. “MPD remains committed to working with our community and system partners to build sustainable neighborhoods free of crime for everyone to work, play and live in.”
Neither the Brady Street Business Improvement District nor Alderman Alex Brower immediately responded for comment.
