Amazon’s Jeff Bezos‘ wedding to wife Lauren Sánchez was a lavish affair that took place in Venice on June 27. The stars, including Oprah, Usher, Bill Gates, Gayle King, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and more gathered to celebrated love, but one notable figure was missing—Mariah Carey. Paparazzi later questioned her absence from the alleged $50 million dollar event.
“What did you think about Jeff Bezos’ wedding?” the photographer asked the “We Belong Together” singer. She casually replied, “I wasn’t there.”
He fired back, “Were you not invited, or what?” To which Carey responded with a coy giggle, “Oh, don’t turn this into that.”
The photographer then backed off.
This isn’t the first instance when a major pop culture event or notable figure wasn’t on Carey’s mind. Back in 2003, the singer was asked about Jennifer Lopez and famously quipped, “I don’t know her.” In a 2015 interview with The Cut, Carey explained that she was “just being honest and everybody’s kind of blowing it out of proportion.”
Though it appeared to be a diss, Carey told Andy Cohen in 2016 that the comment was “so long ago” and chalked it up to her simply being “forgetful.” Lopez also confirmed that the women didn’t know each other, having never met.
The singer may have skipped out on Bezos’ wedding to finish her 16th studio album. Following the release of its lead single, “Type Dangerous,” Carey shared with Apple Music that the project may feature 12 songs and will have some “Mariah ballads.” A second “summery” single is set to drop in the near future.
