Motorists from mainland China’s Guangdong province will be able to apply to drive into Hong Kong from as soon as November under a highly anticipated cross-border scheme, transport minister Mable Chan has said.
The scheme was expected to strengthen ties between the city and the rest of the Greater Bay Area, while injecting fresh vitality into sectors such as catering, retail and tourism, the city’s largest business chamber said.
The Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme was originally expected to be implemented in December, the government said earlier this year.
Chan said on Wednesday that vehicles would be allowed to enter the city via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, with a daily quota of 100 applications.
“We will start off with the quota of 100 in an orderly and controllable manner before reviewing the experiences and increasing the quota.”
