WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A former wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers is among some of the celebrities attending the 23rd annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational in Wilmington.
Lynn Swann will be attending the event at the Country Club of Landfall alongside National Baseball Hall of Fame member Fred McGriff, former professional basketball player Travis Best, NFL star Ed “Too Tall” Jones, former professional tennis player Katrina Adams and MLB standout Steve Lyons.
Swann played for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1974 to 1982.
“Willie Stargell has always been an All-Star on and off the Diamond,” Swann said. “He set examples of how to conduct yourself 24-7. As a young athlete, trying to transition to Pittsburgh and Pro Sports, Willie provided a positive path to follow.”
According to the foundation, nearly 50 celebrities will attend the invitational to raise funds for local people living with kidney disease.
The foundation was established in 2002 following the death of Baseball Hall of Fame member Willie Stargell from kidney failure. His widow, Margaret Weller-Stargell, founded it after his passing.
The invitational will be held from Nov. 7 to 9, and while it sells out every year, the foundation says there are sponsorship opportunities still available.
