Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu praised the transformative potential of the low-altitude economy, as Hong Kong’s low-altitude economy regulatory sandbox pilot program launched yesterday.
In a Facebook post after the launching ceremony, Lee described the low-altitude economy as a key driver of innovation and a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s future development.
”The low-altitude economy holds immense potential and offers a wide range of applications,” Lee wrote.
”It is a strategic emerging industry that aligns with national development goals and will bring significant benefits to Hong Kong’s economy and society.”
The low-altitude economy, which involves the use of airspace below 1,000 meters for commercial and public services, is seen as a critical component of China’s broader strategy to develop new quality productive forces.
In his 2024 policy address, Lee outlined a series of measures to promote the sector, including the establishment of a dedicated task force to oversee its development.
“We are committed to creating an ecosystem that supports the growth of the low-altitude economy in Hong Kong, ensuring it becomes a new engine for our future economic growth,” he added.
At the launch ceremony, Lee toured the 15 demonstration zones, which showcased applications in logistics, public services, and scientific research, among other fields.
He engaged in detailed discussions with the leaders of each exhibition area to gauge the latest advancements in their projects.
One notable showcase featured the Fire Services Department’s use of drones equipped with image analysis software to expedite search and rescue operations.
”The integration of drones and advanced software has significantly reduced the time needed to locate individuals in distress, demonstrating how technology can enhance public safety and social welfare,” Lee said.
He expressed optimism that the Regulatory Sandbox projects would soon be widely implemented, benefiting both the economy and society.
Lee also highlighted the broader implications of the low-altitude economy, noting its potential to drive advancements in communication technology, artificial intelligence, and digital industries.
Meanwhile, Jacqueline Kang Junjun, chairman of Shanghe Technology, shared insights into her company’s pioneering role in deploying low-altitude control systems in Zhuhai.
Kang announced that Shanghe Technology plans to actively participate in Hong Kong’s low-altitude economy development and collaborate with the Regulatory Sandbox project.
”Our goal is to explore new low-altitude applications in Hong Kong and promote the integrated development of low-altitude spaces across the Greater Bay Area,” she said.
