Liverpool is the defending Premier League champions and are in fifth place, 16 points behind league-leading Arsenal, with nine games to play this season. One of the world’s most storied clubs, Liverpool is tied for the most league titles in English history with 20 and has won the Champions League six times, tied for third-most all time. The club claims to have over 26 million American supporters and was the most-watched Premier League team in the United States last season.
Liverpool’s stars include Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah, the Premier League’s all-time top foreign goalscorer, and Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk, who is considered to be one of the greatest center backs of his generation. Midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz and Alexis Mac Allister are among the best in the world at their positions, and forward Alexander Isak is the most expensive transfer in the history of British soccer.
Sunderland returned to the Premier League this season for the first time since 2016-17 after being promoted from the EFL Championship. The Black Cats are in safe position to remain in the league in 11th place, 15 points above the relegation zone. Their captain, midfielder Granit Xhaka, also captains the Switzerland national team.
