It’s a long-haul travel day for President Donald Trump, who left for Asia late Friday night ET and is expected to arrive on the continent Sunday morning local time.
We’ll have live updates on the president’s trip — which will include stops in Malaysia, Japan and South Korea — starting tomorrow, so stick with us for the latest on his visit.
In the meantime, here’s a look ahead:
Trump-Xi meeting: The marquee event is the first sit-down with Chinese leader Xi Jinping of Trump’s second term.
The US and China have recently slapped each other with sweeping trade measures, setting back relations after months of relative calm. This week’s trade negotiations will likely feature discussion of China’s restrictions on rare earths, Washington’s effort to curb exports of US technology, and — of course — Trump’s tariff policy.
What else is on the president’s calendar: On Sunday, Trump will meet with Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of Malaysia, which is hosting this year’s summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He’ll then attend a working dinner with leaders from the association.
On Tuesday, Trump is due to meet the newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
That visit will be followed by a Wednesday meeting with South Korea President Lee Jae Myung in Busan. Trump will then deliver remarks at a luncheon for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and participate in a US-APEC leaders working dinner.
We’re likely to learn more about the president’s calendar as the days go on, and we’ll continue to update our reporting as new information becomes available.
