La Liga 2025-26: Sevilla coach Almeyda handed seven-match ban after referee confrontation, to appeal suspension

The Spanish Football Federation on Wednesday suspended Sevilla coach Matias Almeyda for seven matches following his dismissal during La Liga fixture at the weekend.

Almeyda was sent off late in Sevilla FC’s 1-1 home draw against Deportivo Alaves on Saturday after clashing with match officials.

The federation’s disciplinary committee said the sanction comprised three matches for contempt towards the referee, two for complaints directed at the officiating team, one for failing to leave the technical area immediately after being shown a red card, and one for conduct deemed contrary to public order.

Almeyda remained on the touchline briefly after his dismissal, seeking an explanation from the referee.

He later apologised for his actions but added that he wanted clarity over the decision.

Sevilla termed the punishment “excessive” and said it would appeal against the sanction.
