MOREHOUSE PARISH, La. (KNOE) – March is National Nutrition Month, and some experts say practicing healthy eating habits with your child at a young age could benefit their growth.
Morehouse Parish Schools Director of Child Nutrition Ashley White says fast food and sweets can only take a child so far throughout their day. She says starting your child’s morning with whole grains and fruits can be helpful, especially on school days.
White says adding foods with omega-3 fatty acids like fish or foods with antioxidants like berries to your child’s plate can help with brain development, behavior and more.
“So we really try to pack a punch early, so they can make it through the day. As an adult, if we miss a meal we’ll get hungry, and can’t concentrate. So, when we’re feeding kids and students, it’s really all about ensuring they can get through the day. If you’re hungry, you have a hard time concentrating. You can have behavioral issues and issues with academics, and serving good options for lunch and breakfast to keep a child full and sustained,” White said.
