Kevin Costner & Morgan Freeman Produced TV Show Gets Uninspiring RT Score

Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman reunited to executive produce a Civil War drama on Prime Video, but the result landed with a thud. The Gray House was released with high expectations given the pedigrees attached, but the reviews tell a different story. The eight-episode miniseries, which dropped February 26, 2026, currently holds a mediocre score on Rotten Tomatoes.

What critics are saying about The Gray House in reviews

The series follows female Union spies operating in Confederate territory, inspired by true events. Mary-Louise Parker, Amethyst Davis, Daisy Head, and Ben Vereen lead the cast. Leslie Greif, who created Hatfields & McCoys, co-wrote the show with Darrell Fetty and John Sayles. Roland Joffé directed. Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman executive-produced The Gray House.

Some critics found the show to be decent. Maggie Lovitt from Collider called it “a brutal, unrelenting exploration of the lives of history’s forgotten heroes,” rating it 7/10. Richard Roeper from RogerEbert.com said it “delivers in its core mission to pay tribute to the women and their allies who made invaluable contributions in the battle to save the United States from the traitors who waged war against our country.”

However, other The Gray House reviews were less kind. Daniel Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter wrote, “At best, it’s a dry, poorly edited, questionably acted Wikipedia entry in which most of the facts contain the qualifier, ‘This information cannot be verified.’ At worst, it’s an accidental episode of Drunk History.” Kyle Mullin from Under the Radar described the series as “duller than an old butter knife (musket duels notwithstanding). Sadly, turning point history comes off wishy-washy on The Gray House,” and rated it 4/10.

The Gray House gets a poor score on Rotten Tomatoes

The Gray House Rotten Tomatoes score currently sits at 50%, reflecting the divided critical reviews. The series holds a split Tomatometer rating based on early reviews. This might change as more reviews come in.

Paramount’s Republic Pictures produced the show with Costner’s Territory Pictures, Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment, and Greif’s Big Dreams Entertainment. It’s currently available to stream on Prime Video.
