Jeff Bezos’ ex wife’s philanthropy under fire? MacKenzie Scott’s donations worth billions spark controversy as organisations face FBI investigations over Hamas ties

MacKenzie Scott, billionaire philanthropist and ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, donated more than $7 billion, making her one of the most generous philanthropists alongside fellow billionaires Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett. Last year, Mackenzie Scott’s total donations since 2020 rose to $26 billion and more than 2,700 gifts. However, a report by Fortune now claims that Scott, may have donated millions of dollars to a funding network that supports organisations facing FBI and congressional investigations over alleged ties to Hamas. Last year, MacKenzie Scott reportedly donated $5 million, and in 2021, $10 million, to the Solidaire Network through her charity, Yield Giving.

The Solidaire Network describes itself as an organisation that connects social movements with donors to build systems rooted in love and justice. However, tax records and press releases reviewed by Fortune indicated that the network has provided funding to groups including Students for Justice in Palestine and American Muslims for Palestine. As per a December 9 blog post written by MacKenzie Scott, her philanthropic organization Yield Giving donated to Solidaire Network, which says it “nurtures relationships between social movements and members to create regenerative systems rooted in love and justice.”

This means in practice that the network has funded organizations including Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), the US Palestinian Community Network, and the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), according to tax filings and press releases from the Solidaire Network. Both these organisations- SJP and AMP- face investigations in both the House and Senate for allegedly coordinating with terror group Hamas to start anti-Israel protests in the US, the report says.

MacKenzie Scott’s charity donations under scanner

MacKenzie Scott has drawn scrutiny for her substantial donations to certain organizations. It has been revealed that MacKenzie Scott’s financial contributions are linked to entities under investigation by the FBI and Congress for alleged connections with Hamas. Both organisations are under investigation by the US House and Senate over allegations that they worked with Hamas to organise anti-Israel protests across the United States.

According to Fortune, the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability sent a letter to the executive director of American Muslims for Palestine in May 2024, raising concerns that groups spreading pro-Hamas messaging and allegedly breaking laws on college campuses may be receiving funds from sources linked to Hamas or other terrorist organisations. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability “is particularly concerned that organizations promulgating pro-Hamas propaganda and engaging in illegal activities at institutions of higher education might be receiving funding or other support from foreign or domestic sources which support the aims of Hamas or other foreign terrorist organizations,” according to a letter dated May 29, 2024 sent from the committee to Osama Abuirshaid, executive director of AMP.

The report further noted that US Senator Tom Cotton asked the FBI in September 2025 to investigate the Palestinian Youth Movement, describing the group as hostile towards Jewish people. Cotton’s request followed remarks by the organisation’s leader, Aisha Nizar, who had urged supporters to disrupt the US F-35 fighter jet supply chain. In a statement shared by Fortune, Cotton said that such remarks amounted to incitement of violence against US national security interests by encouraging actions against individuals involved in building the F-35 and seeking to jeopardise the delivery of a key strategic defence asset.

“Nizar’s statements constitute direct incitement of violence against U.S. national security interests by advocating for actions against the men and women who build the F-35 and seeking to imperil the delivery of one of the nation’s most strategic assets,” Cotton said in a statement.

Mackenzie Scott’s donations

Mackenzie Scott has a current net worth of about $40 billion, most of which she gained from her 2019 divorce from Bezos. Many of her 2025 donations went to causes focused on DEI, disaster recovery, and higher education. But one gift she made last year has sparked some debate. The ex-wife of Jeff Bezos ecently cut down her stake at the company by nearly 50% to donate to charities.

With an estimated net worth of about $40 billion, largely derived from her divorce settlement with Bezos, Scott ranks among the world’s largest philanthropists alongside Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates and Warren Buffett.

It is important to note that the Solidaire Network also funds other progressive groups working on racial and gender equality, climate change, and economic fairness, in addition to the groups currently under scrutiny. Scott was also just one of more than 280 people who donated to Solidaire Network in 2021. “Funding social movements while transforming our own relationship to wealth is clearly the way to go for philanthropy. MacKenzie’s generous, no-strings-attached gift honours our bold ambitions for our collective work,” the Solidaire Network noted.
