Maika Monroe revealed a new update on the long-awaited sequel to It Follows. She confirmed when production on They Follow will begin and shared a timeline for the next chapter of the horror story.
Maika Monroe gives filming update on They Follow
Maika Monroe confirmed that filming for They Follow, the sequel to the 2014 horror film It Follows, will begin in summer 2026. Speaking at SXSW, Monroe told the audience, “I did this tiny little movie called It Follows at the very beginning of my career. We’re filming the sequel this summer.” The actor originally broke out with her role as Jay Height in the first film.
The team announced a sequel to It Follows in 2023, reuniting director David Robert Mitchell and Maika Monroe for the project at NEON. The 2014 film received strong critical reception and became one of the most acclaimed horror releases of that year. Monroe played Jay Height, the central character in the film’s supernatural storyline.
Filmmakers originally planned to begin production on the sequel in 2024 but delayed it due to scheduling conflicts. The setbacks pushed the project past its initial timeline before the latest update confirmed that filming will begin this summer. Monroe also discussed returning to the character more than a decade after the original film’s release.
“It’s been very cool to see… this character that’s so important to me… see where she is ten years later,” Monroe said while discussing the sequel. In the original film, Jay becomes the target of a mysterious supernatural force that begins stalking her after a sexual encounter. The sequel expands the scope of that threat.
Earlier this year, Monroe also commented on the direction of the new film and how the story approaches the character’s future. “It’s not at all what I expected, where you would find Jay, which I thought was really interesting,” she said. “I was like, ‘Whoa! Cool,’ which I think the audience will probably have a similar reaction.” If filming begins this summer, the film could arrive in theaters in 2027.
