The 1998 monster movie, Godzilla, will be leaving Netflix next month. The Hollywood re-imagining of the original Japanese movies features a distinct version of the iconic dinosaur-inspired creature that has remained one of the most recognizable monsters in movie history.

Godzilla will exit from Netflix’s library on March 1, 2026 (via What’s on Netflix).
As a part of Netflix’s monthly process, the film is a part of a long list of movies that will be delisted due to changes or expiration of their respective streaming licensing agreements. Subscribers have until the end of this month to watch it.
Roland Emmerich directed the movie from a script he co-wrote with Dean Devlin. The film’s cast features Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno, Maria Pitillo, Hank Azaria, Kevin Dunn, and Michael Lerner, among others.
Released in 1998, Godzilla opened to a mixed to negative reception. It currently holds a 20% Tomatometer score and 28% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, it earned over $379 million globally.
Created by Japanese filmmaker Ishirō Honda, Godzilla has been a popular movie monster since his debut in 1954.
After obtaining a license from Toho to make Godzilla, TriStar Pictures, the movie’s production company, had plans to produce a trilogy. However, the movie went through significant challenges during its production.
In an undated interview, Devlin said, “We have a GODZILLA trilogy in mind” (via Sci-Fi Japan). “The second one is remarkably different from the first one, and if it’s embraced, a third one would make a whole lot of sense.” The same article also revealed that due to the poor handling of the property, the studio ultimately decided to cancel the trilogy and let the license expire in 2003.
Godzilla has since received several other reboots in the form of films and series, and will appear again soon in Apple TV’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2. The series is part of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Mosterverse and is premiering later this month on Friday, February 27, 2026.
