Two years ago, on October 15, 2023, Suzanne Somers passed away from cancer. She had battled breast cancer for years, and she died just one day shy of her 77th birthday.
This week, a photo of Suzanne Somers appeared on her official Instagram page which her family continues as a way of celebrating her life and promoting her many creative and business endeavors. The page marked the anniversary of her death by simply stating, “Two years.”
Here’s how Hollywood looked back on Suzanne and how her beloved, long-time husband Alan Hamel is honoring Suzanne’s memory.
Barry Manilow Remembered Suzanne Somers as ‘the sister I never had’
Barry Manilow was devastated to hear that Suzanne Somers had passed. Shortly after her death, he told Entertainment Tonight, “”Suzanne and I were friends for decades. She was the sister I never had and my close confidant forever. We shared triumphs and heartaches.”
“Her fame in so many fields overshadowed her real talent as one of our greatest comedic actors, a loving mother, an amazing homemaker, and one of the world’s best cooks. I will miss her dearly and hope that she is now out of pain and at peace,” he added.
Viola Davis Admired Suzanne Somers as a ‘joy’
Within her remembrance post for Suzanne Somers, Viola Davis shared, “I grew up watching Three’s Company. You were a joy and forever young.”
Christine Lakin Loved Suzanne’s ‘excitement for life’
Christine Lakin played the stepdaughter of Suzanne Somers in Step by Step. She had a strong bond with the star and posted an Instagram tribute to Somers after she died. Part of what Lakin said was, “She was easily the most glamorous person I’d ever met. Her warmth and humor was what made her so real and down to earth to everyone she crossed paths with. She was an icon yes, but she was also an inspiration in the early fight for equal pay in the entertainment industry. She was an author, a survivor, a speaker and an incredible entrepreneur.”
She went on to remember how Suzanne Somers was like a second mom to her while she was growing up on the set. She also admired how Somers and Patrick Duffy set the tone for any idyllic set experience. She added, “She was goofy and self-deprecating which made her beauty disarming. She had an excitement for life that was and will always be inspiring. I feel so lucky to have crossed paths with this wonderful woman. It’s hard to believe she’s gone from this lifetime.”
Fran Drescher Remembered Suzanne Somers as ‘sweet and talented’
Fran Drescher posted a photo of her with Suzanne alongside her thoughts on the loss. She stated, “The heaviness of this past week’s horrors just got worse with the loss of friend Suzanne Sommers. She was a sweet & talented woman, a wife and mother. Survivor and thriver for more than 2 decades. But so sad to say she passed away today. Life is very hard, wherever we can bring joy, love, empathy and kindness as we move thru each day, do it! RIP dear Suzanne, you will long be remembered.”
Suzanne Somers Is Adored and Remembered by Her Husband As He Continues His Life
Alan Hamel, the long-time husband of Suzanne Somers, remembered his wife with an emotional Instagram post on her official page shortly after she passed away.
To celebrate her memory and her upcoming birthday, Alan Hamel recently spoke with Woman’s World about how he is keeping Suzanne’s memory alive yet also continuing his life with new experiences.
Hamel told Woman’s World that he still thinks of Suzanne Somers all the time. He said, “We were together for 55 years. We lived together for nine years before we got married.”
He shared with the magazine that he and Suzanne talked a lot before she passed and one of the last things she said to him was, “I don’t want you to mope around. I want you to live your life because you have a great life ahead of you and I don’t want you to walk around all depressed.”
Despite that, Hamel did mope around for a year and a half. Then he did his best to face life in a different way and met actress Joanna Cassidy. He calls her his “sole date”, and they are happily in relationship. He says Suzanne would approve and thinks she sent him Joanna.
However, Hamel makes it clear that Suzanne Somers will always be a big part of his life. He thinks about her all the time, and Cassidy is okay with that. He also continues the businesses Somers started and felt so passionately about sharing with the world.
