Honor’s Bold Claims About The World’s Thinnest Foldable Phone Don’t Hold Up

Just days before Samsung took the spotlight at its big Unpacked 2025 event with the reveal of its thinnest foldable phone ever, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Honor tried to steal some of the attention with a surprise announcement of its own. The company introduced the Honor Magic V5, proudly calling it “the thinnest foldable phone in the world.” Naturally, this bold claim grabbed headlines, but as it turns out, things aren’t quite as they seem.

Thanks to the sharp eyes of popular industry leaker @UniverseIce, we now have a clearer picture. They recently shared a side-by-side comparison of the Magic V5 and Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 7, and guess what? The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is actually thinner. That’s right, despite Honor’s confident marketing, the visual evidence tells a different story.

So how did Honor come up with its numbers? According to the company, the Magic V5 measures 8.8mm when folded, technically making it 0.1mm thinner than Samsung’s 8.9mm Fold 7 and Oppo’s Find N5. But when you take a closer look at Honor’s official website, things start to make more sense. In the fine print, Honor admits that its measurement comes from internal lab tests, and more importantly, it excludes the protective film on both screens and even the raised camera bump.

Now, leaving out the camera bump isn’t unusual in the smartphone world. But excluding the protective layers on the screens? That’s definitely not standard practice. By doing this, Honor was able to claim it had the world’s thinnest foldable, even though, in real-world use, it clearly doesn’t.

As the comparison shows, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 is visibly slimmer and, many would argue, better built overall. It looks like Honor’s clever marketing tactic worked for a short while, just enough to grab some attention ahead of Samsung’s big event. But now that people are taking a closer look, it’s clear that the Magic V5’s “world’s thinnest” title doesn’t really hold up.

Samsung’s Fold 7 keeps its crown as the thinnest foldable, while Honor’s claims feel more like a temporary publicity stunt than a true achievement.
