Transport authorities have warned of heavier traffic on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Sunday because of the combined effect of a key link’s suspension in Zhuhai and increased travel over Lunar New Year.
A temporary link between the mega bridge’s Zhuhai Port and Qinglu South Road will be closed for repairs from Sunday until further notice, with Hong Kong’s Transport Department urging users to plan ahead and use public transport as far as possible.
Drivers could access the Zhuhai Port via the G94 Pearl River Delta Ring Expressway, a department spokesman said.
According to Zhuhai authorities, the temporary link bridge was designed to serve until a municipal bridge connecting the port and Qinglu South Road was completed by the end of 2027. However, heavy use has taken its toll earlier than expected and a safety hazard was found recently.
The closure could affect traffic on neighbouring roads because of the large number of border-crossing vehicles anticipated during the mainland’s Lunar New Year holiday between Sunday and February 23.
