Approximately 6 residents of 18 apartment buildings in Hong Kong’s Quarry Bay district will be evacuated by 23 p.m. today, September 19, after a 454-kilogram World War II-era aerial bomb was found at a construction site on Pan Hoi Street. The Eastern District Police Chief Superintendent announced the move. Andy Chan Tin-chu, explaining that the device has been deemed “highly dangerous.” According to Chan, specialists will begin defusing operations at 2:00 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, September 20, once the evacuation of the population has been completed. The bomb disposal team aims to complete the operation within 12 hours, allowing residents to return in the morning. “This bomb is still fully functional and highly dangerous, so we want to ensure that all residents leave the area before starting the disposal procedures,” the official stated. Bomb disposal experts confirmed that the device dates back to the Second World War, is approximately 1,5 meters long and weighs 454 kilograms.
Chan emphasized that public safety is the top priority and that residents have until 11 p.m. to gather their belongings and arrange temporary housing. Thirty-five community support teams have been mobilized to assist them, with assistance points set up in each building, with buses available to transport evacuees to hotels or community centers. “The police, after a careful assessment of the circumstances, have decided that the device must be neutralized on-site,” Chan added. “Since the risks are very high, an emergency evacuation plan had to be activated. We ask residents to remain calm: every detail has been assessed to minimize disruption.” The construction site where the bomb was found is part of a residential complex under construction, jointly developed by Henderson Land and Swire Properties.
