Vellarikundu: 108-year-old Mariyamma Chedathi was overwhelmed with excitement when all her family members gathered around her to sing ‘Happy Birthday’. 

This grandmother, who does not need support to perform her daily activities has an excellent memory too. She recalled the times when she migrated to Malabar from Anikkad in Kottayam with her husband Arakkal Paulose in 1985.

A clean and nutritious diet plays a pivotal role in keeping Mariyamma healthy, even at the age of 108. She consumes rice only once a day and enjoys fruits very much. She doesn’t eat meat except beef.

Mariyamma finds solace in prayer and makes sure to say her prayers at least twice a day. She is generally healthy other than some difficulty hearing. Mariyamma who has seen five generations of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren attributes her longevity to a healthy lifestyle. She lived with her older son Xavier in Padimaruthalla until his death.

Now, she has moved in with her younger son Arakkal Jose and his family in Karuvulladukkam. Mariyamma vows she is happy as she is showered with love by her children and grandchildren.

Meanwhile, Fr Dr Johnson Anthyamkulam, Vicar of Vellarikund Cherupushpam Forane Church and assistant vicar Fr Jerin visited Mariyamma Chedathi to wish on her 108th birthday.
