A man in Maine wrote in to “The Ramsey Show” with a desperate question: Am I wrong for being angry?

Thomas said he helped his wife pay off nine credit cards and thought they were on the same page financially. But recently, things took a turn. She started using those same credit cards again and even applied for a new one. When Thomas pushed back, her response was sharp: “My money is none of Dave Ramsey‘s business and none of yours.”

Tension Over Money, But The Problem Runs Deeper

According to co-host John Delony, who read the letter aloud on the show, Thomas isn’t just dealing with money issues; he’s dealing with resentment, power struggles, and a relationship breakdown.

“Honestly, if Thomas was here and he just said this to me, I would stop, take out my earpieces and give Thomas a hug,” Delony said. “It’s just hard.”

He and Ramsey both agreed the conflict is no longer about credit cards or budgets. It’s about control. Ramsey said, “If you turn my name into a cuss word in your house, you did not accomplish a thing.”

The couple is in what Delony calls a full-blown civil war. “We are now just shooting grenades at each other,” he said. “And we’re going to end up killing our family and our friends.”

Thomas also said his wife refuses to use her master’s degree in communications and instead works a low-paying job with no benefits. He noted that she also has student loans, which she now considers “none of my business.”

Ramsey called this situation “contempt,” a dynamic where both partners have lost respect for each other. He said that contempt is one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in relationships. It means you’ve completely lost any respect for them. Your need to serve them and love them is just gone,” he said.

Ramsey pointed out that both spouses are playing the blame game, saying things like “You should” or “You need to.” According to him, that kind of attitude only fuels conflict. “If you go around and say, ‘Dave Ramsey said,’ nobody gives a crap what Dave Ramsey says. What they care about is information that will change their life.”

The hosts advised Thomas to stop fighting, seek counseling, and try to reset the relationship. “This is when you lay down your sword,” Delony said. “And if we can’t get on the same page, this is over,” Ramsey added.
