Women who cross the age of 30 may undergo some physical changes, including hormonal imbalances. There are a few key signs that indicate hormonal imbalances in women of 30 and older. For example, hair fall, weight gain, irregular periods, etc.
Dr. Ashwin Shetty, Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai explained in detail the most important signs of hormonal imbalance in women over 30 that should not be neglected.
5 Critical signs of hormonal imbalance in women over 30
1. Unexplained weight changes
According to the gynecologist, changes in weight is one of the most important signs of hormonal imbalance. Dr. Ashwin Shetty explained, “Sudden weight gain or loss, especially around the midsection despite consistent diet and exercise, often signals thyroid dysfunction or hormonal imbalance. These changes can indicate conditions like hypothyroidism or PCOS requiring medical intervention.”
2. Severe period irregularities
There are many reasons why you may have irregular periods. Dr. Shetty says changes in hormonal balance is an important one. “Missing periods for months (outside of pregnancy), extremely heavy bleeding, or cycles shorter than 21 days can indicate serious hormonal disruptions affecting fertility and a woman’s wellbeing,” Dr. Shetty said.
3. Persistent insomnia and night sweats
The expert says inability to sleep at night and night sweats could also indicate you are undergoing hormonal imbalance. Dr. Shetty explained, “While occasional sleep disturbances are normal, chronic insomnia combined with drenching night sweats may signal premature ovarian insufficiency or thyroid issues, particularly if you’re over 40.”
4. Extreme mood swings and depression
Hormonal imbalance can also affect your mental health. Dr. Shetty says mental health signs like mood swings and depression could be indicators of hormonal imbalance. He said, “Hormonal imbalances can trigger debilitating anxiety, depression, or anger that interferes with daily functioning. These aren’t character flaws—they can be suggestive of premenstrual dysphoric disorder which requires diagnosis and treatment.”
5. Hair loss/facial hair and acne
Changes in the quality of hair and skin could also be due to your hormones. If your hormonal balance is disrupted, you could face hair fall and acne. The doctor said, “Thinning scalp hair, particularly with facial hair growth, suggests elevated androgens. This combination requires evaluation for conditions like PCOS or adrenal disorders.”
He concluded, “If you’re experiencing multiple symptoms, document them and consult your gynaecologist. Blood tests measuring thyroid function, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels can identify imbalances early, when treatment is most effective.”
