General Hospital is bringing back Nathan Dean as Ethan Lovett, the son of the late Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton. He was introduced in 2009, with his run lasting until 2013, before making temporary returns in 2015 and 2020. In 2023, the role was briefly played by James Ryan for several episodes, after which the character was sent to Australia. Now that he has returned, curiosity has piqued about his inclusion in the ongoing storyline.
Nathan Dean returns as Ethan Lovett on General Hospital
Dean will make his debut as Ethan Lovett on General Hospital next month, after being absent from the show for six years. In conversation with TV Insider, executive producer Frank Valentini confirmed his return while teasing what fans could expect from his storyline. The EP said, “We are so excited that Nathan Dean is returning to General Hospital as Ethan this April. We have a great story planned — with, of course, a few twists along the way.”
Dean’s Lovett last appeared in September 2020, when he encountered Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) in Monte Carlo. At the time, Olivia teamed up with Robert to search evidences on Holly, who was presumed dead. To help them out, Ethan joined their search, only to eventually end up assuming that Holly is no longer in this world.
The storyline took a surprising twist in 2022, when it was learnt Holly is alive. It was known that Victor Cassadine was responsible for her disappearance. Moreover, Victor also held Ethan captive. In 2023, Ryan took on the role of Ethan, who was tracked down by Felicia and Holly. They finally found him in Venezuela.
Ethan’s return to the General Hospital storyline could prove to be significant and impactful following the death of his father, Luke Spencer, in 2022. Luke was played by Anthony Geary, who stepped away from acting in 2015. However, his character remained alive off-screen until it was confirmed in 2022 that he had passed away. In reality, Geary also died at the age of 78 in December 2025 due to surgical complications.
