A skirt and shirt made out of a bed sheet, a puppy outfit and a patriotic-themed shirt and shorts were among the styles shown off at this year’s Logan County Fair “Blue Jeans and Country Dreams” 4-H Fashion Revue held Friday evening at Northeastern Junior College.
Participants in four divisions decorated or constructed a garment and then modeled it. The judging was based on posture, poise, grooming, attitude and the outfit on the model. This includes becomingness to the model, choice of texture, color and style, fit, and accessories.
Judges for the event were Sharon Blackham and Breann Schwartz and the emcee was Heather Brungardt.
This year’s winner in the Junior Division was Kate Tribbett with her Upcycle Your Style project. She had no trouble deciding what to create; inspired by her love of sports and school spirit, she chose to transform a classic jean jacket into the perfect fan use for the upcoming school year. She kept the front of the jacket plain and simple, adding subtle decals to the pockets and collar, and across the back, she proudly placed the word Caliche, along with the decals representing all of her favorite sports.
The jacket was perfectly paired with a black dress, a sporty pair of Nikes and a gold and black handmade hair ribbon tied into her high curly ponytail.
Reserve Champion in the Junior Division was Julia Frank for her Upcycle Your Style project. She showed off her love for puppies with Jordache super skinny jeans, adding fashionable white ribbon with black paw prints running up the outer seam of both sides, paw prints on the back pockets and three of her favorite puppy faces on the front. For her top, she chose a cornflower blue short-sleeved t-shirt and used the same dog faces and paw prints on it.
Frank accessorized with large black hoop earrings, a simple black necklace and black sandals.
Other competitors in the Junior Division were Jacie Adam, Briar Alderson and Charlie Wright.
The Intermediate Division Champion was Remi Gerlach for her Upcycle Your Style project, a denim jacket that she remodeled. She found the idea for a bleached and dyed distressed denim jacket on Pinterest.
After purchasing a jacket at a garage sale for under $20, she first bleached half of the jacket, finding it lost its color surprisingly fast, and then used a purple dye dip process, which took a little longer, because she wanted to get a dark hue. The next step was to splatter paint the purple section to give it some dimension and for the final touch, she added a decal to the back that encompasses what she loves to do, “Always Take the Scenic Route.”
The jacket was paired with a black top and leggings, Converse shoes, simple earrings and a necklace.
Intermediate Reserve Champion was Paisley Alderson for her recycled outfit. She wore a skirt made out of a floral-patterned fitted sheet from Goodwill and a thrifted plain white tank with straps that tie at the shoulders made out of the same sheet.
The United States generates over 34 billion pounds of textile waste each year. Natural fibers like cotton or linen are biodegradable; however, synthetic fibers like what is used to make much of today’s clothing can take centuries to decompose and release harmful chemicals into the environment. The bed sheet Alderson found would likely have ended up in the landfill; instead, she was able to give it new life for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase new materials. She is proud to have turned a $2 bed sheet and $2 thrifted tank into a stunning outfit.
Alderson paired the outfit with white leather sandals and a pearl necklace.
Other competitors in the Intermediate Division were Mya Friend, Jaiden Gerk, Brennyn Kailey, Peyton Veik and Natalee Winslow.
The Senior Division Champion was Piper Withers for her Buymanship project. When she went to the store, she walked past a cream netted duster and when she sat down to think of items she wanted to base her outfit off of this year, she knew it was perfect. Taking advantage of the sleeveless duster, she found a maroon off-the-shoulder shirt to go underneath and paired it with blue jeans, cowgirl boots, silver jewelry and handmade bracelets.
The Reserve Champion in the Senior Division was Mattea Pelton for her paint suit made from a light olive wool silk blend. The asymmetrical neckline, angled cap sleeves and wide-legged pants with exaggerated cuffs made this much more fun to make than the traditional pant suit. It has four pockets and the suit’s structure is strengthened by antique gold, paisley lining and stiff interfacing made specifically from wool to strengthen the collar.
It was the most challenging outfit Pelton has made in all her years of sewing. The pattern had 26 pieces and keeping them straight made her question some of her life choices. The most difficult part was figuring out how to attach the lining for the jacket because the pattern did not have instructions for lining. Antique green and gold buttons and a belt offered the perfect embellishment.
Withers and Pelton will represent Logan County at the Colorado State Fair.
Every year, there is an Encore Division at the fashion revue. The Encore Division is judged on suitability of the clothing to the person, appropriateness for the occasion, and fit.
This year’s Encore Champion was Julia Frank, who wore a sage green Seersucker polyester dress with an open back tied together with a bow. She was asked to wear the dress when she served as greeter and program girl for a close friend’s wedding. “You quickly noticed the empire waist and gathered top combined with a terrific skirt and capped sleeves, this all beautifully accentuates her dark complexion.”
The outfit was paired with a gold and white long pearl necklace, elongated diamond earrings that really sparkled, a large white and diamond cross bracelet with gold and white pearls and handcrafted Corral boots.
Reserve Champion in the Encore Division was Paisley Alderson, who wore a maroon peplum top with a rhinestone floral pattern, paired with high-waisted Levi jeans. She accessorized the outfit with a gold colored necklace and white Sorel wedge sandals. Alderson imagined herself wearing the outfit to walk around the fair, for a night out with the girls, or for sports dress-up days at school.
Other competitors in the Encore Division included Briar Alderson, Mya Friend, Remi Gerlach, Braya Kailey, Brennyn Kailey, Kate Tribbett, Piper Withers, Charlie Wright and Jacie Adam.
Along with the models in the judged categories, the show featured the 2025 royalty and 2026 contestants.
