U.S. President Donald Trump is among the nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025, an award he has long coveted, styling himself as a global peacemaker who, through the use of hard American power and his own tough-talking diplomacy, claims to have ended several conflicts.
The announcement coincides with what is shaping up to be Trump’s crowning achievement in this field—a peace deal that ends the current war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, and—if the fragile agreement survives its tense early phases—could eventually help solve the Middle East’s most intractable problem, a source of death and destruction for decades.
But there is also a notable shortcoming: Despite his ongoing efforts and a promise to end it on “day one” of his second term as U.S. president, Trump has so far failed to bring about the promised peace agreement in Ukraine, where Russia’s invasion is ongoing and has even escalated in recent months.
- Nobel Peace Prize to be announced at 5 a.m. EDT
- Many states, officials said they have nominated Trump
- Trump says his interventions ended several brief wars in 2025
- Among them are Israel-Iran, Thailand-Cambodia, and India-Pakistan
- Timing may be Trump’s downfall in the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize
- Nominations for the prize ended January 31, right at the start of Trump’s term
- Committee then added more names at a February 28 meeting
- Final Nobel committee meeting happened before Israel-Hamas deal was finalized
