The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is the regulatory body overseeing the ICT sector in Kenya, with responsibilities spanning telecommunications, cybersecurity, e-commerce, broadcasting, and postal/courier services. In addition, CA manages the country’s numbering and frequency spectrum resources, administers the Universal Service Fund (USF), and safeguards the interests of consumers of ICT services.
Through a Type Approval process, the Authority ensures that all ICT devices meet national and international standards related to safety, health, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This process protects consumers from hazardous products, minimizes health risks, and prevents interference with other electronic equipment.
Recent market surveillance by the Authority has revealed an influx of non-type approved mobile phones, which pose significant safety and health risks to users. The specific brands identified include TINSIK, REALFONE, F+, FONROX, MEZ, NEMOJO, BUNDY, QQMEE, U-FM, VUE, CHATADA, SUPERX, MOMOFLY, WR, SMBA, Q-SEVEN, UGBAD, FT, RAENO, and SWITCH.
In light of these findings, the Authority advises the public not to purchase this non-type approved mobile phone brands. Vendors are strictly prohibited from selling them. Consumers are encouraged to buy mobile phones only from licensed telecommunication equipment vendors, whose details are available on the Authority’s website .
Before purchasing a mobile phone, consumers should also verify that the device has been type approved by checking the list of approved equipment on the same website. Additionally, the authenticity of mobile phones can be confirmed by dialing *#06# to obtain the 15-digit IMEI number and sending it via SMS to 1555, or by using the CA’s IMEI checker — a free service provided by the Authority.
