China Carbon Emissions Rose in 2024 Despite Solar, Wind Installation Growth

China’s carbon emissions grew slightly last year as new clean power installations couldn’t keep pace with a surge in energy demand, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

Emissions rose 0.8% from 2023, CREA lead analyst Lauri Myllyvirta said in a report Monday. The China climate researcher had earlier raised the prospect that growth in solar, wind and hydropower generation, along with a slowdown in energy demand growth, would allow the country to begin reducing emissions well ahead of Beijing’s target of 2030.
