CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – It’s Charlotte Fashion Week! The latest fashions will hit the runway this weekend, right here in the Charlotte Metro.
Nearly 80 designers have converged on the Queen City to showcase their work, and we’re getting a glimpse into all the glamour.
From global designers.
“Our mission is to bring designers from our country and surrounding countries near the Black Sea to present their collections in the United States,” said Nia Nielson with GEO in Style.
To newbies breaking into the fashion business.
“The name of my clothing brand is One Versus A Million,” said designer Allie Jones. The 12-year-old is one of the youngest designers showcasing her streetwear designs on the runway. “I was just drawing on my iPad. And that’s how I came up with most of my designs,” said Jones.
This year’s red carpet is also being rolled out to highlight issues that extend past the glitz and glamour. Charlotte Fashion Week will put a spotlight on bullying and cancer – two topics that are front and center at this year’s event.
“My mother has passed away from cancer, and also my boyfriend’s father. But everyone is touched by someone that has passed away from cancer. And bullying, oh my goodness. Most of our models have been bullied, and their stories now of finding a platform of friendships and confidence is so much more and they become alive on our platform,” said Founder of Charlotte Fashion Week and producer of Charlotte Screen Rita Miles.
Miles said this is the 15th year to bring this glamorous runway show and all the events leading up to it to North Carolina. Saturday will mark the 200th show.
“So, because of the internet and Instagram, now fashion is everywhere, worldwide,” Miles said. “So, you don’t necessarily have to go to New York or Paris or Milan. You can find it right in your backyard.”
International fashion houses, such as GEO In Style from the country of Georgia, came to our backyard to showcase their latest creations from fashion designer Sophie Harchi.
“She has very unique designs where she takes antique style and combines with the like a princess beauty look, and every single time she does a different theme,” said Nielson.
So, no matter whether established designers hit the runway or up and comers like Allie, take inspiration from seasoned professionals.
“To keep going and, you know, tune out all of the negativity. If you really want to do something, put your mind into it,” Jones said.
