San Diego’s top nightlife destination is set to close in August after years as a magnet for out-of-town celebrities and locals alike.
Since opening on Jan. 18, 2017, Oxford Social Club has attracted famous athletes, musicians and actors into the basement-level nightclub inside the Pendry Hotel in the Gaslamp.
The list of celebrities spotted at the exclusive club includes LeBron James, Idris Elba, Jack Harlow and Tommy Pham while performances came from Post Malone, Anderson .Paak, Debaby, Ne-Yo, Tyga, Flo-Rida, Jeezy and more.
Some held special events.
Local football star Reggie Bush held a party at the club when his Heisman Trophy was reinstated. Colombian-American actress Sofia Vergara hosted a private event promoting her skincare line, toty. Rap icon Snoop Dogg served as the club’s DJ over Memorial Day Weekend.
All of that will end on Aug. 16, the last day the nightclub will operate.
Oxford Social Club was founded by Clique Hospitality with the Las Vegas-based 81/82 Group.
Hospitality did not explain the closure nor what will replace the nightclub, but did send this statement:
After several dynamic years of redefining nightlife in downtown San Diego, Oxford Social Club will open its doors for one final evening on Saturday, August 16. We are deeply grateful to all who have joined us, from epic celebrations to unforgettable nights featuring special appearances by Snoop Dogg, Post Malone, Jack Harlow, and many more. We extend our sincere appreciation to our exceptional team members, whose dedication and talent have been instrumental to our success. We are actively working to place them at open opportunities within Pendry San Diego.
Pendry has other hospitality venues within its space at 435 Fifth Ave., including Lionfish Modern Coastal Cuisine, Provisional Kitchen, The Pool House, and Nason’s Beer Hall.
For eight years, Oxford Social Club reigned as the pinnacle of San Diego’s nightlife scene from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday through Sunday.
With a capacity of 418 people, SanDiegoVille described Oxford Social Club as one of the city’s top “see-and-be-seen” spots.
To keep its elite audience coming back, the nightclub was renowned for its cocktail menu, VIP experience and classy ambiance.
Whether those guests will look for alternate destinations in San Diego or will find entertainment in other cities may reshape nightlife in downtown.
